Homework
What is our homework?
This is a crucial aspect of your child’s schooling to reinforce and practice skills they have learned. Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday.
1-Reading Homework- read a book of their choice for 20 minutes (30 minutes half way through the year) Reading will be expected every night and once over the weekend. However, to build and maintain a routine, reading each night, even over the weekend and vacations will be beneficial to your child. Please check to see if your child understands what he/she is reading by asking thought-provoking questions. You will be required to sign your child’s agenda every night indicating they read for homework. NO reading log is necessary.
2-Math-We do not give math homework, but please feel free to have your child practice math facts, story problems, or problem solving at home.
3-Spelling-Students spelling is optional, as we will practice and complete assignments in class. Extra practice at home is encouraged but not necessary. Your child's spelling words can be found in their agenda weekly.
4-Projects-In addition, research and/or other projects will be sent home to complete throughout the year. Your child will have plenty of time to complete these types of assignments. When we do assign the “bigger projects” your child will also be given the due date. I recommend using a calendar (or your child’s agenda) to mark the initial assignment and the due date, so they can ‘plan’ when to work on these assignments.

Why homework?
As a second grade team, we understand the value of teaching children ‘responsibility’ and life’s lessons at an early age. Homework, as well as taking out the garbage or cleaning the dishes off the table, work hand-in-hand to help instill the importance of working within time limits and sense of obligation. Commitments to after-school sports and other areas of interest (dance, soccer, piano, etc.) are also included in this realm and need to be incorporated in that time frame.
We believe in nurturing the entire child, not only the academic child! If there is ever an evening where things are crazy, please don’t hesitate to send your homeroom or math teacher an e-mail. We understand that life can get wild. Things unexpectedly happen or moods change on a dime and completing homework seems impossible......just let us know!
